This is the story of Fire & Rescue Services in Nottinghamshire
The book takes the reader from 1914 when there was a Police - Fire Brigade
in the city, through the Zeppelin raid of 1916 and then the 1920s and
1930s when the fire brigade crewed ambulances as well as fire engines.
The National Fire Service was established in 1941 and after the war, the
service was split into the City Fire Brigade and the County Fire Brigade.
The 1950s, 60s, and 70s saw many challenging emergency incidents in
Nottinghamshire and the part that the Fire & Rescue Service played is
described in detail so that the reader can visualise the events that took place.
The stories take us all the way through to the amalgamation of the City
and County Brigades in 1974 and on the way we turn out to chemical
incidents, train and aircraft crashes, water rescues, rescuing people by
rope, fires in warehouses, underground tunnels, football stands, power
stations and inevitably, house fires where people are trapped.
The reader can trace the sixty year journey of brigades in the county through
eyewitness accounts from people interviewed by the author. The personal
accounts have been interwoven with information from official documents
and contemporaneous sources.
All the sites mentioned in the book have been visited by the author - even those that have changed irrecoverably have been 'walked' to get an understanding of the topography of the incidents described.
The book is illustrated throughout with pictures that bring the historic events to life.
